Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D-IL)

Arrested this morning. For placing the following on EBay:

“For Sale:

One U.S. Senate seat, now vacant, in excellent condition, lightly & briefly used by the previous occupant on his way to better things.

Minimum bid: $500,000. Will consider comparable offers of a cabinet position, feather bed union job, or lifetime sinecure for the little woman or equivalent”

The NY Times reports that this was negotiable – he would have taken a cabinet position as Secretary of HHS, or a cushy union job, or maybe just settled for a $150,000 salary do nothing gig for his wife.

The Washington Post provides additional detail on Blagojevich’s apparently long string of corrupt activities, including Obama’s old friend Tony Rezko (there’s a pretty strong connection between Blagojevich & Rezko), as well as this tidbit suggesting that Blagojevich thought that Obama’s folks might help swing a corrupt deal:

“Later the governor, Harris and others discussed a deal involving the Service Employees International Union, based in Washington.

‘Harris said they could work out a deal with the union and the President-elect where SEIU could help the President-elect with Blagojevich's appointment , while Blagojevich would obtain a position as the National Director of the Change to Win campaign and SEIU would get something favorable from the President-elect in the future,’ according to the government's news release this morning.”

I doubt that the Obama team would have been stupid enough to go along with this – at this stage, one imagines that they’re pretty sensitive to Rezko and related corruption issues. It is unsettling that Blagojevich thought that he actually had a chance to work an angle here.

Puts a different spin on Gov. Blagojevich’s attempted shakedown of Bank of America the other day, no?
