Somali pirates hijack ship, British guards escape

Turns out the “guards” were unarmed. Not sure what they were expected to do when the pirates showed up – curse a bit?

Two simple and straight forward solutions to this problem:

Equip merchant vessels operating in this area with high quality radar. Add a complement of 8-12 security guards with access to some reliable surface to surface missles and serious small and intermediate arms firepower.

Recomission the New Jersey, attach a couple of deystroyer escorts, station her 20 miles off the coast of Somolia, and blast anything that moves. If that doesn’t work, start dropping 16 inch shells into downtown Mogadishu until one stone is not left atop another.

Case closed.

Unnecessarily brutal? Perhaps, but until you take away both the profits from piracy and the safe havens, this problem will persist. Plus, it sets a deterrent for future would-be pirates.
