Speed Traps Just to Raise Cash?

Say it ain’t so!

Well, ok, like nobody who’s driven through Boston Mills, Peninsula, or Cuyahoga Falls is shocked at this news.

Just unusual for a judge to be so open about it. From Bob Dyer’s ABJ piece:

“During the same conversation, Hoover talked about how the city of Rocky River managed to win a special grant to pay its cops to hide out on Interstate 90 and write extra tickets to finance the construction of a new courthouse.

‘For that golden period, they were charging a special-projects fee [on every ticket],’ Hoover said. ‘And I think they paid for their new courthouse in about 10 years. Did I think that was a great idea? Sure did.’”

Thanks for clearing that up, Kimmy. Until now, we all had the notion that there was a connection between speed limits and safety. But now we know that, like most government activities, it’s all about the Benjamins.

Next thing you know, we’ll be hearing that red light cameras are not about safety, but raising cash as well. Oops, too late.
