Hitting the Wrong Target

My guess is that the Club for Growth and the Sierra Club don’t agree on much, but this piece is a case of joint non-marksmanship.

The real issue is one that they don’t address – the fact that there is a need for “527s” at all. If you need to adhere to some obscure provision in some tax code or election finance law in order to participate in the political process by *gasp* advertising, the state of your speech isn’t very free. As noted on Instapundit, much of campaign finance reform is the effect of reducing the candidate pool to the self-financing few.

So, instead of prolonging the endless loop of McCain Feingold’s unintended consequences with more of the same, with more unintended consequences, why not just junk the whole thing, and let political speech be free?
