Another note on the 3 followers of Rousas John Rushdooney

And their insidious plot to take over America. On the very day I’m putting together a piece on the dubious character of religious arguments for raising the minimum wage, Ross Douthat is busy repeatedly putting a knee into the rhetorical groin of the would be Paul Reveres of the “Theocracy is coming! Theocracy is coming” movement. You have to read the whole thing to get an idea about how complete a smackdown this is.

If you are trying to build a case that the cults of the Mormons and Moonies are going to sign up with the orthodox Christians to take over America, as Kevin Phillips apparently is, get a nickel and stick it in the nearest cluemeter. At least Phillips writes as one who knows what it takes to get a ‘republican’ favorable reviews on the NYT.

To pluck a paragraph at random, Douthat nails the We Believe folk (a quick glance at the sermon list is enough to know that what one of the things they believe is that religion shouldn’t be used as a method of attack expect for attacking conservatives):

“A Christian is… allowed to mix religion and politics in support of sweeping social reforms— but only if those reforms are safely identified with the political Left, and with the interests of the Democratic party.”
Kinda captures the whole enchilada.
