A Pajamas Media Quibble

Most of the pieces in the “Top Articles” section are not bylined. “Pajamas Media in Sydney” or “Pajamas Media in Los Angeles” don’t qualify, since we don’t have any idea who these people are. Given that most of these posts are stylistically blog carnivals, it doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it would be good to know who is doing the selection & editing. Part of the whole accountability schtick.

While I post as “boring made dull”, this doesn’t qualify as an anonymous blog – just check the profile. As Ed Whelan notes in another context:

“Writing in an institutional or anonymous voice encourages recklessness and irresponsibility. It’s no coincidence that the nastiest and stupidest comments on blogs and in e-mails are anonymous.”

Now, the stuff I’ve read on the PJ article section hasn’t fallen into the nasty / stupid category, but if you want to move into the big time media arena, clearly identifying who’s responsible for what would be a good step in the right direction. Not using the personal byline seems contrary to the whole “open” media idea.
